German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach admitted that the COVID-19 vaccine can have “absolutely disturbing” side effects. Once referred to as “Germany’s Fauci” by the Washington Post during the pandemic, and an adamant proponent of lockdown and mandatory vaccination, this comes as a serious recognition of the fears many held about the vaccine.

Speaking to German news station ZDF, Lauterbach said of those suffering adverse vaccine reactions, that “every case is one too many … they have severe disablement, some of which will be permanent.” However, there are no drugs or treatment available yet for those suffering, and the health insurance entitlements are slim, leaving ‘post-vax’ victims in a difficult situation.

Lauterbach had previously been in favour of mandatory vaccination, and pushed for further COVID measures as late as last autumn, after most countries had dropped lockdown restrictions.

While talking to ZDF, he was pressed on his previous stance that the vaccine had no side effects. Lauterbach said this “was an exaggeration I had once made in an ill-considered tweet,” and was keen to downplay the numbers, insisting adverse reactions were still “less than 1 in 10,000 vaccinations.” However, this still amounts to a total of 333,492 cases as reported by the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut.

For Lauterbach, the priority now is to facilitate the care of those suffering from post-vaccination syndrome. He said he is negotiating for the budget programme to both facilitate this and to study ‘post-vaccination’ effects in depth.

While it is felt that the pharmaceutical companies responsible should pay for these damages, the minister noted that one of the difficulties is that “under these EU agreements, the vaccine manufacturers are, to a very large extent, exempt from liabilities.” Yet, in spite of this he still felt that the companies should contribute to fund for the victims, because “[a]fter all, the profits have been exorbitant. Simply exorbitant. Therefore, this would be more than a gesture of good will, but something that should be expected of them.”

As EU politicians raise questions about excess mortality, and von der Leyen’s vaccine procurement comes under increased scrutiny, the admissions from Germany’s government are adding to a growing case against the once-unquestionable decisions and narratives of the pandemic."
